This concept was proposed as a way to manage ecosystems and protect many species by focusing on protecting the needs of just one species. But ecosystems are complex and especially when talking about connectivity umbrellas, one species may not be enough. We have tackled this question in our recently published paper, summarized below in nine points.

Protected Areas are insufficient to conserve ecological processes. We need Connected Landscapes

Landscape connectivity is often modelled for one or few species based on a few life history traits. Usually large-bodied charismatic species such as elephants or large carnivores such as brown bears.

Several studies have shown that we need multiple species. We ask which ones and where.

We developed an approach to do exactly that. Using continental Europe as a demonstration, we modelled connectivity for 24 mammals in 13 geographic biomes and 36 nested ecoregions

We found that multiple species were selected in most geographic biomes. There is quite a large diversity in the species selected as connectivity umbrellas, and that the suite of species differs across the regions

The selection of connectivity umbrellas depends on the scale. More species were needed in larger regions (geographic biomes) than in the smaller ecoregions. Also, the identity of species differed at the two scales.

There is no one species that is a connectivity umbrella across its range! So one size does not fit all.

We asked what could be the interaction of the underlying landscape and traits of the species selected as connectivity umbrellas. Turns out that the traits of selected species in landscapes less impacted by humans differ from those in more fragmented landscapes.

A one-line summary: “Considering multiple species, not just in relation to species attributes but in relation to landscape scale and characteristics may be the key towards identifying connectivity umbrellas that better represent the needs of entire species communities”.

by Nuria Selva

An umbrella species is a species whose conservation is expected to confer protection to a large number of co-occurring species.
