{"id":2900,"date":"2026-07-23T11:40:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T09:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carpathianbear.pl\/?p=2900"},"modified":"2026-07-23T11:40:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T09:40:08","slug":"good-news-for-bear-conservation-from-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carpathianbear.pl\/en\/2026\/good-news-for-bear-conservation-from-italy\/","title":{"rendered":"Good news for bear conservation from Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The results of a new estimate for the Marsican brown bear show a population recovery compared to the last estimate in 2014.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Marsican brown bear (<em>Ursus arctos marsicanus<\/em>) is a subspecies of brown bear endemic to a small area of the Central Apennines in Italy. This unique subspecies faces significant conservation challenges, including inbreeding and excessive human-related mortality (Benazzo et al., 2017; Falcucci et al., 2009). An estimate conducted in 2014 indicated a population of around 50 individuals within the species&#8217; core range (Ciucci et al., 2015).<\/p>\n<p>For the new assessment, data were collected across the entire distribution range of the subspecies, including peripheral areas and covering approximately 6,500 km\u00b2. This represents the most extensive and systematic monitoring effort ever carried out for the Marsican brown bear. The work was led by the Ministry of the Environment (MASE), the Institute of Applied Ecology (IEA), and ISPRA, in collaboration with protected area authorities, the Bear Monitoring Network, and local administrations.<\/p>\n<p>Using spatially explicit capture-recapture models, researchers estimated a population of 81 individuals, with a confidence interval ranging from 73 to 88 bears. While the population in the core area remained stable or increased slightly, the detection of 16 individuals in peripheral areas suggests an expansion of the species&#8217; range.<\/p>\n<p>These results provide encouraging evidence that conservation efforts have been effective.
