A yearling male bear was found in the wild showing severe problems with coordination and died shortly after a routine immobilization procedure. Post-mortem examination revealed extensive changes in the lungs, and further analyses identified lipid pneumonia, a rare condition in wildlife in which fat accumulates within the lung tissue. Infectious causes were ruled out. To our knowledge, this is the first documented case of lipid pneumonia in a free-living brown bear and only the second case reported in the entire bear family. Although the cause of the condition remains unclear, this case highlights the value of post-mortem examinations of protected wildlife. Such investigations provide important information on diseases and causes of death that are difficult to detect in wild animals and contribute to long-term wildlife health monitoring and conservation.<\/p>\n
