Every two or three years, this international gathering brings together bear researchers from across the world to exchange knowledge and learn about the latest advances in the study and conservation of all eight bear species.

This year, the main theme was human-bear coexistence, which was addressed from different points of view: scientific research, management practices, and community engagement. The location of the conference venue was particularly meaningful: Pescasseroli is in the heart of the area which is home to the endangered Marsican brown bear. We were able to explore its unique habitat and learn about the successes of the Bear-Smart Community model in fostering coexistence.

Throughout the week, sessions also tackled many more topics, including management, population estimations, behaviour, ecology and physiology. Our team members contributed both with oral presentations and posters, sharing ongoing work and engaging in discussions with colleagues from diverse regions and disciplines.

We return home inspired, carrying new ideas for the future and stronger connections with fellow bear biologists.

From the 20th to the 25th of September this year, members of our team attended the 29th Conference of the International Association for Bear Research and Management (IBA), held in Pescasseroli, in the Central Apennines of Italy.
