The advancing Bear Care 2024 conference organized by Bear Care Group in collaboration with the Oakland Zoo and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife was held in Oakland, California from April 30 – May 3. This conference was successful in bringing together many delegates from around the world to discuss the issues surrounding free-ranging bears coming into human care and how to provide the best care for them in zoos, sanctuaries and rehab facilities. We had great discussions on the complexity of decision-making by different entities at various levels as bears transition into human care and how organizations can work together to improve these processes. Presentations also included the latest work in daily care, training, enrichment, habitat design, medical care and husbandry routines. It was a very inspiring event showcasing delegates with varied backgrounds exchanging knowledge and experiences in an integrative and inclusive manner.
