Welcome Naima Dalpiaz – Our new PhD researcher on human–wildlife coexistence

Naima has recently started a PhD at the Institute of Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences, within the project Human-wildlife conflict under global change.

She completed her Master’s degree in Evolutionary Biology in September 2023 with a thesis in lynx spatial ecology, the main results of which were recently published in her first research paper as first author. She later acquired experience working in the field both in the Romanian Carpathians, where she participated in systematic monitoring of the Eurasian lynx population, and in the Italian Central Apennines, where she worked as a field technician in a project aimed at producing a new estimate of the marsican brown bear population through non-invasive genetic sampling, as well as a project aimed at developing guidelines for systematic monitoring large mammals in the Italian national parks.

As part of her PhD she will conduct a large-scale systematic review of literature on human-wildlife conflicts. She will also explore the ecological pathways through which human-driven global environmental change influences the frequency and severity of negative interactions between humans and terrestrial vertebrates.
