IOP PAN clarifies the limitations involved in estimating the brown bear population size at the national level

In light of information circulating in public discourse regarding the number of brown bears in Poland, the Institute of Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences has published material on its website clarifying the limitations involved in estimating the population size of this species at the national level.

The material highlights that currently, the only reliable method for estimating the brown bear population size is the genetic method. This method, in the form defined in the current national monitoring methodology for the brown bear, has been approved by the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection for estimating the brown bear population size in Poland. However, it has not yet been implemented. This prevents the acquisition of reliable estimates of the species’ population size at the national level.

It was also pointed out that data on brown bear numbers in Poland published in certain sources, including statistics from the Central Statistical Office, are not based on scientific methods appropriate for assessing the population size of large carnivores. These data are of administrative origin, derived from field observations, and do not meet scientific standards; therefore, they cannot be considered reliable estimates of the brown bear population size.

Reliable scientific data are crucial for making informed decisions on nature conservation, the management of large carnivore populations, and addressing human–wildlife conflicts. Therefore, it is important to use appropriate research methods and to interpret the available information with caution.
